In a significant diplomatic engagement, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval recently met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing to emphasize the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border for the advancement of bilateral relations. This meeting, marking the 25th round of talks between the special representatives of the two nations, delved into critical issues such as boundary delimitation, border management, and enhancing cooperation across the frontier.
Both India and China positively assessed the progress in their bilateral relationship, focusing on strategies to ensure stability along the Line of Actual Control. The discussions reaffirmed their shared commitment to seeking a political resolution to the boundary dispute, guided by their long-term interests. This dialogue follows the 2024 understanding reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, aimed at reducing tensions in the Ladakh sector, which has led to the resumption of people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade through designated routes.
Ajit Doval highlighted the gradual normalization of bilateral ties, attributing this improvement to the sustained peace along the border. Concurrently, China underscored the need to contextualize the boundary issue within the broader bilateral relationship. Although the talks did not divulge significant developments regarding the actual demarcation of the disputed boundary, both nations agreed to continue negotiations, planning the next round of special representative talks in India in 2027.
The timing of these discussions holds particular significance as they precede the anticipated visit of President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September.
