China has made history by reaching the quarterfinals of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time, overcoming France in a dramatic penalty shootout in Rabat. The Chinese team triumphed 4-3 in penalties, following a tense match that ended in a goalless draw.

Goalkeeper Niu Ziqi was the standout performer, saving two crucial penalties to ensure China’s advancement to the last eight. Despite France’s dominance in the first half, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, while China improved after halftime with strategic changes implemented by coach Ma Xiaoxu.

In the decisive penalty shootout, Liu Yuxi and Liu Yuke set the tone by converting China’s initial attempts. Niu Ziqi then made a vital save against France’s Lea Motyka, keeping the teams level at 2-2. Yang Lan and Cheng Wandi successfully scored their penalties for China, and Niu’s save against Lisa Mabilon sealed the victory.

China’s journey to the knockout stage was marked by impressive performances, having finished atop Group E with three straight wins. They secured victories over Kenya (3-0), Samoa (7-0), and the United States (3-2), earning their spot as group leaders.

Next, China will face Brazil in the quarterfinals on November 1. Brazil earned their place in the last eight after a thrilling 8-7 penalty shootout win against Poland, following a 3-3 draw.
