Chinese President Xi Jinping led a ceremony in Beijing on Wednesday to honor national heroes and martyrs on Martyrs’ Day, a day dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives for China’s national independence, development, and prosperity. The event took place at Tian’anmen Square, just a day before the country’s National Day celebrations.
Martyrs’ Day, observed annually on September 30, was marked with a solemn ceremony where Xi, alongside other senior leaders, paid tribute by observing a moment of silence after the national anthem was played. The ceremony featured the presentation of nine large flower baskets at the Monument to the People’s Heroes, symbolizing respect and remembrance for those who contributed to the nation’s history.
Since the official establishment of Martyrs’ Day in 2014, President Xi has consistently participated in the annual event. This year, representatives from various sectors of Chinese society also took part, reflecting the broad acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by martyrs throughout the country’s history.
This year’s observance coincides with two significant historical milestones: the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 90th anniversary of the end of the Long March, a pivotal event in Chinese history that occurred from 1934 to 1936. These anniversaries highlight the continued importance of remembering and honoring those who have played crucial roles in shaping modern China.
