China Criticizes US Sanctions Threat on Tech-Driven Russian Energy Deals

The Chinese government has expressed strong disapproval over a proposed sanctions bill in the United States targeting leading purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas, including China. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, emphasized that China would take all necessary steps to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its businesses.

Lin highlighted China’s firm opposition to unilateral sanctions that lack a foundation in international law or approval from the United Nations Security Council. The proposed U.S. legislation seeks to impose restrictions on major global buyers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, reflecting ongoing geopolitical tensions.

China’s response is rooted in its broader stance against what it perceives as unjust unilateral sanctions, with Lin cautioning that such measures could ultimately be counterproductive. This proposed U.S. action is seen as a move that could potentially complicate international relations and economic interactions.

Lin also accused the United States of applying double standards and employing coercive tactics, suggesting that these strategies would not yield the desired outcomes. The remarks underscore China’s broader opposition to what it views as unlawful and unilateral moves by the U.S. that disregard multilateral frameworks.
