China has raised concerns regarding Japan’s expanding military activities, cautioning that Tokyo’s recent defense strategies might threaten peace and stability in the region. During a routine press conference on Tuesday, Guo Jiakun, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, addressed reports about Ukrainian drone companies seeking collaboration with Japanese firms. He emphasized that international partnerships should aim to enhance regional stability and security instead of escalating tensions.
Guo highlighted that Japan has been increasingly focused on military growth in recent years. This includes developing medium- and long-range offensive capabilities, loosening restrictions on the export of lethal weapons, expanding the operations of its Self-Defense Forces, and strengthening security alliances with nations outside the region. He argued that these actions surpass the constraints of Japan’s defense framework established after World War II and challenge the principles of its traditionally defense-oriented security policy.
The spokesman further expressed that such developments could weaken the international order established post-World War II and contradict Japan’s long-standing reputation as a nation dedicated to peace. Guo’s remarks suggest that Japan’s moves are perceived as a shift away from its pacifist stance, raising alarm in the region.
In light of these developments, China has called on the global community to maintain vigilance over what it describes as indicators of increasing militarization.
