Hong Kong and Uzbekistan are set to enhance their bilateral relations with a newly established mutual visa-free travel agreement. Under this new arrangement, visitors from both regions will be able to stay for up to 30 days without the need for a visa. The agreement was solidified through an official exchange of notes between the governments, in a ceremony attended by Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee and Uzbekistan Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov. Both parties are now focusing on the details of the implementation to introduce this arrangement as swiftly as possible.
Presently, Hong Kong passport holders enjoy visa-free access to Uzbekistan for up to 10 days. In contrast, Uzbek citizens currently need a visa to enter Hong Kong. This new agreement marks a significant shift in policy, aiming to bolster economic, trade, tourism, educational, and business connections between the two regions. It is also a part of Hong Kong’s larger strategy to broaden its cooperation with emerging markets, particularly in Central Asia.
The travel industry has already responded with enthusiasm to the announcement, as tour operators are beginning to offer more travel packages to Uzbekistan and other destinations in Central Asia. The visa-free policy is anticipated to facilitate greater people-to-people interactions, which authorities believe will be instrumental in supporting long-term economic cooperation between Hong Kong and Uzbekistan.
As both sides work towards implementing the agreement, the initiative is seen as a promising development in enhancing ties and fostering mutual understanding between Hong Kong and Uzbekistan. By removing visa barriers, the agreement is expected to pave the way for increased tourism and business exchanges, further solidifying the relationship between the two regions.
