China has imposed export controls on 20 Japanese entities, requiring Chinese companies to seek prior approval before supplying them with dual-use items. This move comes amid escalating tensions between Beijing and Tokyo. According to China’s Commerce Ministry, the restrictions aim to curb what it perceives as Japan’s increasing military ambitions and fears of potential nuclear-related activities. The restrictions cover goods, software, and technology that serve both civilian and military purposes.
The targeted organizations include the National Institute for Defense Studies in Japan, as well as several subsidiaries of prominent defense firms such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. In response, Japan has condemned the decision, labeling the measures as unacceptable and calling on China to lift the restrictions. Japanese officials have warned that this action could harm economic and trade relations between the two nations.
The relationship between China and Japan has been under strain in recent months, primarily due to security concerns. This includes Japan’s plans to expand its defense capabilities and statements made by Japanese officials regarding Taiwan. This is not the first time Beijing has introduced export restrictions targeting Japanese entities, as the two countries navigate their complex diplomatic relationship.
