China is set to broaden its import strategy during its upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan period from 2026 to 2030, focusing on acquiring advanced technology, essential industrial components, energy resources, and premium agricultural products. This initiative, announced by the General Administration of Customs, aims to support the nation’s industrial modernization and enhance domestic consumption by offering Chinese consumers a broader array of quality international goods. A significant aspect of this strategy is the diversification of countries from which China sources its imports.
In the first half of the year, China’s trade activities saw notable growth, with imports increasing at a faster rate than exports. This surge is attributed to heightened domestic demand for advanced equipment, technology, and consumer goods. As part of its import expansion, China plans to ease market access for overseas agricultural and food products by simplifying quarantine and import approval processes. Since the beginning of the year, China has granted market access to 264 categories of agricultural and food products from 79 new countries, expanding its import sources to over 150 countries and regions worldwide.
The move towards greater market openness reflects China’s commitment to diversifying trade and strengthening global economic cooperation, according to Chinese experts.
