China has issued a caution to the United States regarding how it handles matters related to Taiwan following a statement by former U.S. President Donald Trump about his intention to speak with Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te. Such a direct conversation is a sensitive issue for Beijing, as the Chinese government considers Taiwan to be part of its territory and opposes any official foreign interactions with the island’s leaders.
Beijing views Taiwan as a province that has broken away and insists on its eventual reunification with the mainland, using force if necessary. The Chinese government is deeply opposed to foreign nations engaging with Taiwan as if it were an independent state and frequently denounces high-level diplomatic engagements with Taipei. Chinese officials have warned that such interactions send misleading signals to those who support Taiwan’s independence and meddle in China’s domestic affairs.
Tensions surrounding Taiwan have been on the rise in recent years. In 2022, China conducted large-scale military drills around the island in response to a visit from a senior U.S. official. Furthermore, Beijing has consistently reacted strongly against American arms sales to Taiwan and the political support Washington extends to the island. Meanwhile, Taiwan, which operates as a self-governing democracy under the official name the Republic of China, rejects Beijing’s claims of sovereignty and insists that its citizens have the right to elect their leaders and engage in international relations.
The United States adheres to the “One China” policy, which involves recognizing Beijing diplomatically while sustaining unofficial ties with Taiwan. Under the Taiwan Relations Act, Washington also provides Taiwan with defensive weaponry. In 2016, Trump engaged in a rare direct conversation with former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, which prompted criticism from China. Any new communication between Trump and Lai could exacerbate already strained U.S.-China relations and might provoke fresh Chinese military maneuvers near Taiwan.
