China Boosts Gold Reserves for 23rd Month Amid Global Uncertainty

by admin477351

China’s central bank has bolstered its gold reserves for the 23rd consecutive month, highlighting its strategy to safeguard against global financial and geopolitical uncertainties. In September, the People’s Bank of China increased its gold holdings to 77.47 million ounces, adding approximately 740,000 ounces from the previous month.

This sustained accumulation of gold is part of China’s broader reserve management strategy, which aims to diversify its holdings and mitigate risks associated with international financial fluctuations and geopolitical tensions. Analysts assert that such measures contribute to the stability and credibility of the Chinese currency, further supporting the gradual internationalisation of the yuan.

Despite the ongoing volatility in global gold prices, China’s commitment to increasing its gold reserves underscores the metal’s role in financial and risk management for central banks, beyond its traditional use as an inflation hedge. The move is perceived as a strategic effort to enhance the resilience of China’s financial systems.

Meanwhile, China’s foreign exchange reserves experienced a decline, falling by $38.1 billion to $3.4003 trillion by the end of September. This 1.11% decrease was attributed to variations in exchange rates and shifts in global financial asset prices, reflecting broader economic and monetary policy changes worldwide. Nevertheless, Chinese officials maintain that the country’s stable economic conditions provide a robust foundation for the continued stability of its foreign exchange reserves.
