A significant recall is underway in China, with Tesla and eight other automakers collectively recalling approximately 4.3 million vehicles due to potential safety issues with concealed or emergency door-release handles. The concern is that these handles may be challenging to locate or operate during accidents or electrical failures, posing a risk to passenger safety.
Tesla is at the forefront of this recall, accounting for the largest portion with around 2.98 million vehicles affected. This includes imported and domestically produced models such as the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. The recall process is set to commence on September 25, with solutions ranging from adding warning labels and enhanced markings to implementing over-the-air software updates.
Regulatory authorities have expressed worries that in the aftermath of severe collisions, emergency mechanical door-release handles could be hard to identify. This difficulty may hinder occupants from escaping or delay rescuers from accessing the vehicle, thus highlighting the urgency of addressing this safety concern.
Aside from Tesla, other notable recalls include approximately 390,000 vehicles from Xiaomi, 371,000 from Leapmotor, and 264,000 from Xpeng. These recalls underscore the automotive industry’s ongoing efforts to meet stringent safety standards.
In response to growing safety concerns, China is tightening vehicle safety regulations and has announced plans to prohibit concealed door handles starting in 2027. This move reflects a proactive approach to enhancing passenger safety, particularly in emergency situations.
